Sarasota Police investigating crash with life-threatening injuries

Sarasota Police are investigating a crash involving life-threatening injuries Saturday night.

Police posted about the crash on Facebook Saturday night. The crash happened at the intersection of U.S. 301 and 21st Street.

Police confirmed the crash involved a vehicle and a bicyclist, who died at the scene, police confirmed May 5.

John Gonzalez, who works nearby, said he came out after the crash.

“It wasn’t a car crash; it was more like a pedestrian on a bike, I guess, who was trying to cross, and they didn’t stop and hit him,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez said he saw emergency responders at the scene.

“The ambulance came and were on him for a second, and they backed off,” Gonzalez said. “I just saw what happened afterward, and they just closed the whole road down. The guy was lying on the ground, and they blocked the whole road. It was chaotic.”

Traffic units stayed on scene until about 1 a.m. Sunday, according to Sarasota police.
