Three drivers and a pedestrian were taken to the hospital following a crash at a major St. Petersburg intersection, authorities said.

It happened just after 10 a.m. Thursday at Central Avenue and 34th Street.

Police say a blue BMW heading southbound on 34th Street ran a red light at Central Avenue. Two black SUVs, which had the green light at Central Avenue, crashed into the passenger side of the BMW.

The crash caused one of the SUVs to roll over and land on top of the BMW. As both cars veered off the street, police say they hit a 49-year-old man standing on the corner.

“The pedestrian was pinned under the wreckage and had to be freed by firefighters and paramedics,” the police department wrote.

The driver of the third car was able to come to a controlled stop on Central Avenue.

All three drivers and the pedestrian were taken to the hospital. The pedestrian remains in the hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The intersection was closed for several hours and people were asked to avoid the area. However, at 2:30 p.m., officials say the roads reopened.

The investigation is ongoing.
