Two women were arrested in Fort Myers on Sunday after being accused of stealing a car, leading to a DUI chase with police.
According to the Fort Myers Police Department, officers responded to a call regarding a stolen vehicle around 5:43 p.m.
The victim told officers that her vehicle, a red Ford Edge, had been stolen from her home. The victim said she believed she had left the only set of keys inside the car when parking it the night prior.
Around 7:16 p.m., officers saw the stolen vehicle traveling east on Victoria Avenue. The officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the SUV. The SUV looked as though it was about to pull over, but then began traveling erratically, FMPD said.
Officers began pursuing the vehicle, and during the pursuit, the front passenger door opened and a passenger, identified as CB, 33, exited the car, tripped and fell, got back up, and began to run away, FMPD said.
B then fell again, which allowed an officer, who was chasing her on foot, to apprehend her.
Other officers continued the pursuit of the stolen SUV, which ran multiple stop signs and lights during the chase. The SUV eventually crashed at the intersection of Fowler Street and Dora Street, FMPD said.
Officers ran to the SUV and detained the driver, who was identified as RC, 21. While responding to the crash, officers found that a 5-month-old child was also a passenger in the car and had been ejected from the car seat due to improper restraints. The 5-month-old was found on the rear passenger floorboard and tended to until emergency medical services arrived, FMPD said. The child was then transported to Golisano Children’s Hospital.
While detained, Bailey gave officers a fake name and told them the child was not hers. A phone call to a family member proved both of the statements to be untrue, FMPD said.
C and B were arrested and transported to Lee County Jail. It was discovered that B had a felony violation of probation warrant out for her arrest.
Officers had C perform field sobriety exercises, which she failed. C was later found to be under the influence of narcotics, FMPD said.
Officers found an open bottle of Don Julio tequila in the car.
B faces charges of probation violation, resisting officers without violence, child neglect and fraud for giving a false ID to an officer.
C faces charges of operating a motor vehicle without a license, grand theft auto, child neglect, fleeing from police, DUI with a person under 18 in the vehicle and DUI with damage to property.
