SUV crashes into semi-truck on US-41, leaving one person dead

PALMETTO, Fla. — A deadly crash involving a semi-truck happened early Friday morning in Palmetto near the intersection with Piney Point Road.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles said a Land Rover traveling south on US 41 at high speed lost control at the highway’s curve and rear-ended a commercial motor vehicle parked on the side of the road loaded with bananas.

The driver of the car died in the crash, according to the North River Fire District. The driver of the semi-truck was not hurt.

When first responders were first called it was only a crash but was soon updated to be a fire, which fire rescue teams discovered when they arrived.

The inside lane has since reopened, but the outside lane is still blocked as crews work to clear the scene and clean up the debris.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
