‘Trauma, heartbreak’: Wife of UCF professor killed in crash with brother speaks out

'Trauma, heartbreak': Wife of UCF professor killed in crash with brother speaks out

The wife of C – one of two brothers killed when they were hit by a suspected drug trafficker on a Central Florida road – is speaking out about her loss for the first time.

In a statement sent to WESH 2, she said she crawled through the wreckage to retrieve personal belongings after the crash.

C, 42, and Tr, 40, died at the scene of the crash near the corner of Sunnytown Road and U.S. Highway 17-92, according to the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office.

Marquavious Wheaton, 26, faces a long list of charges related to the crash and is being held on no bond at the John E. Polk Correctional Facility in Seminole County.

Investigators said Wheaton sped away from an attempted traffic stop and is accused of driving more than 100 mph, blowing through red lights and weaving through traffic before the crash.

Deputies said they did not pursue him.

Court records show investigators believe Wheaton hit another car before crashing into the vehicle that C and T were inside.

C was an assistant professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Central Florida.

Full statement from C’s wife:

“Nothing will ever take away our pain, and nothing can undo what has happened. T and C should still be here. Our lives have changed forever, and the loss we carry is something we will live with every day.

Our only hope is that no other family has to endure the unimaginable grief and devastation that we have experienced. If any good can come from this tragedy, it is that it leads to accountability and helps protect others from suffering the same loss.

C believed in doing what was right. He respected the legal process and trusted that the justice system exists to protect the public. He would want the Department of Justice to do its job fairly, thoroughly, and with the safety of others in mind. With these updated charges, I believe the justice system is taking an important step toward fulfilling that responsibility.

I have seen T and C after the crash. I crawled through the wreckage of the vehicle to retrieve their personal belongings. Those are images and experiences that will stay with me forever. I have witnessed the physical destruction left behind, but twisted metal can be repaired or replaced. The emotional damage inflicted on our family cannot. The trauma, heartbreak, and emptiness left by losing our loved ones is beyond words.

This case is about more than a collision. It is about two lives that were taken, a family that has been forever changed, and a community that has lost two people who were deeply loved. We ask that the seriousness of these updated charges reflect the magnitude of what has been lost and the importance of protecting others from similar tragedies. While no sentence can bring T and C back, we hope that justice will honor their lives and help prevent another family from experiencing this kind of pain.”
