An elderly man is seriously injured, and three others were taken to the hospital after 12 vehicles were involved in a crash in St. Petersburg.

It started when a car tried to merge into the left turn lane when traffic was stopped for a solid red light at 5:39 p.m. Wednesday on the south ramp on I-275 to 22nd Avenue South.

While they were changing lanes, a Ford F750 tanker truck loaded with waste water was speeding and “was unable to mitigate V02 attempting to change lanes,” according to troopers.

The two vehicles collided, and the tanker truck veered right, crashing into 11 other vehicles.

Witnesses said the truck was traveling too fast for the off-ramp before the crash. Troopers said the truck traveled 135 feet after the initial crash, and its GPS stated the truck was going 39 mph.

“Witnesses were not conflicted that V01 was not driving at a speed with due care for the off ramp with heavy traffic,” a news release from the Florida Highway Patrol stated.

The ramp was closed for several hours and reopened after clean up just after 8 p.m.

The 33-year-old driver of the truck was cited for careless driving with injuries, and troopers said speed and carelessness is the primary contributing factor for the crash.
