A boat explosion on the Intracoastal Waterway in Martin County on Thursday morning resulted in injuries to two people, including a baby, according to a spokeswoman for the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.

Initially, MCSO spokesperson Christine Weiss, said the incident occurred on a catamaran when a gas oven was turned on, leading to the explosion. However, Martin County Fire Rescue provided more details later in the day, stating that the explosion occurred when a person on board attempted to ignite a propane coffee maker. The blast caused significant damage to the vessel.

Hazardous materials teams responded to the incident. Propane gas was secured before first responders’ arrival, according to MCFR.

Two people were transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center—one by air with serious burn injuries and one by ground with non-life-threatening injuries, according to MCFR.

The catamaran was carrying six people and was en route from Stuart to the Florida Keys at the time of the explosion, according to initial information from Weiss.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the State Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating the incident, which is believed to have been caused by a vapor explosion. The cause and origin of explosion is still under investigation, according to MCFR.
