Two people were hurt after a truck crashed into a lake in Cape Coral. It’s the third car to crash into a lake or canal in Cape Coral in the past three weeks.
Two people were sent to the hospital early Tuesday morning after a truck crashed into a lake off SW 9th Street. Police said the couple was able to get out of the car before crews arrived. One of them ran to the nearest house, knocked on their door, and told them to call 911.
Rescue crews arrived immediately. Divers made sure no one else was in the water or trapped in the car. ABC7 was there when they pulled the truck out of the river. The driver and passenger are expected to be okay.
This is the third car to crash into a lake or canal in Cape Coral in the past 3 weeks. In two of those accidents, police said drunk or impaired driving may have been a factor. Since Cape Coral has more canals than any other place in the world, police are reminding drivers they need to be extra careful.
“Even just a little bit of impairment can go a long way in your response time reactions,” said Officer Mercedes Phillips. “You might not be aware there is a canal there or a body of water.”
Cape Coral police encourage everyone to have a window puncher in their car in case they do end up in this life-threatening situation.
“It could be a tool that saves your life,” said Officer Phillips.
If you find yourself in a sinking car, try to roll down the windows and get out. However, if your car is filling up with water, your electronics may not be working.
That’s when you want to use the window puncher to smash the windows and then climb out.
If you don’t have a window puncher, you can use the back of a knife, screwdriver, umbrella, or even a high-heeled shoe.
