A woman was arrested Tuesday after she crashed her car, hid in mangroves near the Courtney Campbell Causeway and later bit an officer who tried to help her, according to the Clearwater Police Department.
Police reported that the incident began around 5:30 p.m., when officers started receiving calls about a woman, later identified as Kelsi Cole, who abandoned her car in the westbound lanes of the causeway.
Witnesses told officers that Cole was seen running up to cars and trying to get into them.
Clearwater Fire & Rescue said it arrived at the scene first and moved Cole’s car out of the roadway, but she was nowhere to be found.
A short time later, Clearwater officers said they began to search for Cole and found her naked and hiding in the mangroves near the bridge.
Police said Cole bit one of the officers who tried to help her.
Cole ran back into the water and stayed there for about 45 minutes as several boats from different agencies tried to help her.
She was taken into custody and taken to a hospital to be evaluated. The officer was also taken to a hospital for the bite wound.
Cole was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, according to Tampa police. Clearwater police said she had been involved in two crashes before the incident.
