Woman killed in crosswalk after being hit by car in Brevard County

A woman was killed while walking in a crosswalk when she was hit by a car, shutting down part of US-1 in Brevard County.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened just after 5 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of US-1 and Barefoot Boulevard.

FHP says a 2011 Kia Soul was traveling southbound on US-1 in the inside lane approaching Barefoot Boulevard.

At the same time, troopers say a 55-year-old woman from Barefoot Bay was walking in the crosswalk and was hit by the car.

The driver, a 68-year-old man from Palm Bay, told FHP he entered the intersection on a green light and did not see the woman in the crosswalk.

The driver and his 58-year-old female passenger, also from Palm Bay, were not injured and stayed at the scene.

The 55-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

FHP says they are investigating what color the traffic signal was at the time of the crash.

The crash is under investigation.
