Wrong-way crash on I-75 in Charlotte County leaves 1 dead, children injured, driver arrested

A fatal crash has shut down all northbound lanes of I-75 near the Charlotte-Lee County line, with traffic being diverted at the Bayshore Road exit.

One driver is in custody after a deadly 4-vehicle crash that shut down I-75 at mile marker 150 in Charlotte County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP said in a press release that a Ford F-150 was driving the wrong way on northbound I-75 in the area of the 150 mile marker. The driver was later identified as Dennis Lee Olson, 53, of Sarasota.

Three other vehicles were traveling north on I-75: A Kia Optima driven by a 34-year-old woman with two children, aged 12 and 15, a Honda CRV driven by a 21-year-old woman and a Tesla Model 3 driven by a 19-year-old woman.

FHP said Olson collided with Kia and the Honda. They said the Tesla then struck debris from the crash.

The 34-year-old woman and the two children all sustained serious injuries and were transported to a hospital.

The 21-year-old woman was pronounced dead on the scene.

The 19-year-old woman was not injured.

Olson sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital. FHP says upon his release he was arrested on vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter charges. He was booked into the Charlotte County jail.
