1 dead, 1 injured after shooting at Hillsborough basketball court: HCSO

An investigation was launched Tuesday night after the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said two people were found with gunshot wounds at a local park.

Dispatchers received a 911 call around 7:24 p.m. regarding shots being fired at Plantation Park off Parkcrest Drive in Carrollwood, according to the sheriff’s office.

Once at the scene, deputies found a person suffering from life-threatening injuries. Deputies initially described the person as a “juvenile male,” but later clarified that the victims were 19 and 18 years old.

The 19-year-old, BJ, died from their injuries and the 18-year-old was being treated at a hospital. A physician who was at the park administered first aid to one of the victims, officials said.

Chief Deputy JM explained that the shooting was the result of a fight at a basketball court. As of Tuesday night, authorities said the shooting appeared to be random and not targeted.

“A basketball game should never lead to a senseless act of violence such as this,” said Sheriff CC. “Our detectives are doing everything they can to find out who is responsible for this heinous crime.”

However, there had not yet been any arrests.

“A community basketball court is no place for violent crime, firearm play. It is a place of relaxation and fun,” M said, adding that crimes of this nature are rare in the neighborhood. “On behalf of Sheriff CC, violent crime is our number one priority here. We have allocated all our resources to identify who the suspect is in this case.”

The investigation was ongoing Tuesday, and no further information was immediately available.

Anyone who has further information or video of the incident is urged to contact the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
