10-week-old Florida girl dies in co-sleeping accident: report

A 10-week-old child died Sunday in what Jacksonville officials describe as a “case of co-sleeping,” according to a report from NBC affiliate WTLV.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) was called to a home on Lambing Road at 3:22 p.m. after a baby was found responsive.

Paramedics attempted to revive the child, but she was pronounced dead at the hospital.

JSO believes the girl died while co-sleeping with one of the several people in the home at the time of the incident. Foul play is not suspected to be a factor in her death.

The incident is still under investigation by JSO. The child’s cause of death is to be determined.

Co-sleeping is when a caregiver shares the same sleeping surface, such as a bed, with a young child. The practice is strongly discouraged by health experts due to the risk of unexpected infant death (SUID) and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in babies.

The Sleep Foundation outlines safe co-sleeping practices for parents on its website.
