14-year-old high schooler accused of shooting 11-year-old in West Palm Beach

A 14-year-old student from Palm Beach Lakes High School was arrested on Friday in connection to a shooting that injured an 11-year-old boy.

The West Palm Beach Police Department (WPBPD) said the teenage boy was arrested on school grounds after detectives determined the student was the person who pulled the trigger.

Following an investigation, detectives said the victim was sitting on a couch inside a home in West Palm Beach when the gun went off across the room on October 14.

Following the sound of a gunshot, another boy called 911 to report the shooting. Police and the West Palm Beach Fire Department arrived at the scene at the intersection of 19th Street and Division Avenue, just north of downtown.

Paramedics took the boy, who was shot in the leg, to St. Mary’s Medical Center for treatment. Luckily, the victim was released the same day.

In addition to the 14-year-old boy’s arrest. A 12-year-old was arrested the same night as the shooting. Police said the 12-year-old boy brought two handguns— which were different from the gun that shot the child— to the home onDivision Avenue to sell to the other teens when the shooting occurred. The 12-year-old faces two counts of possession of a firearm.

While the gun that was used to injure the victim has yet to be recovered, the second gun was later found at the 12-year-old suspect’s home.

According to police, the 14-year-old suspect refused to cooperate and was taken to the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice Assessment Center where he faces one felony count of culpable negligence.

At this time, WPBPD said there are no other arrests, but the investigation is still active.
