Two men suffered injuries, one critical, in a crash Friday night on State Road 417 in Orange County that caused the death of a 16-year-old boy, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 9:09 p.m. in northbound lanes north of mile marker 9, in the Hunter’s Creek area, troopers said.
According to an FHP crash report, a Mercedes-Benz SUV being driven by a 25-year-old Winter Garden man and carrying a 16-year-old Orlando boy as a passenger was traveling north on S.R 417 in the inside lane behind a Mitsubishi sedan in the center lane, being driven north by a 30-year-old Kissimmee man. The Winter Garden man swerved into the center lane, causing the front right of the SUV to strike the rear left of the sedan, the report states.
The impact made the sedan start to rotate counterclockwise, now traveling northeasterly toward the east paved shoulder of S.R. 417, troopers said. The SUV was also redirected northeast, traveling off the roadway to the right where the front of the Mercedes-Benz struck a guardrail, the report states. According to FHP, the SUV continued through the guardrail in a northeasterly direction before its right side struck a tree, causing the vehicle to overturn into an embankment.
The Winter Garden man was hospitalized in critical condition while the boy was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead, troopers said. The Kissimmee man suffered minor, non-life-threatening injuries and was also hospitalized, according to the report. Troopers believe all those involved in the crash were wearing seat belts.
FHP is still investigating.
