18-year-old charged for shooting during bonfire gathering in Santa Rosa County

A Milton 18-year-old is charged for a shooting during a large bonfire gathering in Santa Rosa County last weekend.

T N was booked into Santa Rosa County Jail Tuesday afternoon on a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

The incident happened Friday night near the 1900 block of Sid Hayes Road in Chumuckla as 150 young adults and adolescents gathered for a bonfire in the open field.

According to the sheriff’s office, witnesses who remained on scene reported that an argument among a group at the gathering escalated into gunfire. A 20-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

“Deputies provided immediate care to the victim while awaiting EMS, which transported him to a local hospital for further treatment,” the sheriff’s office says in a release. “The victim is being treated for the injuries and a full recovery is expected.”

While en route to the scene, a deputy’s patrol car was struck by a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed.

“The driver lost control, causing a collision with the Deputy’s patrol vehicle,” the release states. “Following the crash, three occupants of the suspect vehicle fled on foot. Through witness interviews, Deputies and Detectives identified one of the fleeing individuals as the shooter.”

T is being held in Santa Rosa County Jail without bond.
