2 killed in head-on crash with wrong-way driver in Lake County, FHP says

A man and a woman were killed in a head-on crash with a driver who attempted to overtake traffic in a no-passing zone Friday night in Lake County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 7 p.m. on County Road 42, near Lazy Lake Road, troopers said.

According to an FHP crash report, the 46-year-old man and 56-year-old woman, both of Paisley, were the driver and passenger of a sedan traveling westbound on County Road 42, respectively. Coming the other direction on County Road 42 was a sedan being driven eastbound by a 26-year-old Tavares man, the report states, adding both vehicles were approaching Lazy Lake Road.

The Tavares man was driving above the posted speed limit and attempted to pass traffic in a no-passing zone while negotiating a curve, troopers said. As a result, his sedan entered the direct path of the sedan occupied by the Pierson residents, causing the fronts of both vehicles to collide, according to the report.

The Tavares man’s sedan ran off the roadway and entered the tree line, troopers said, adding he suffered serious injuries in the crash and was airlifted to the hospital.

The man and woman in the other sedan were pronounced dead at the scene, the report states.

Troopers believe everyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt.

The FHP is still investigating.
