A 14-year-old boy injured in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 75 Wednesday afternoon has died, bringing the total number of people killed to four, troopers said.

The boy from Hillsboro, Texas was the third passenger in a pickup truck carrying four people, all of whom were ejected in the crash that happened a little after 3 p.m. just north of the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The pickup driver, a 36-year-old man, was killed, as was a 34-year-old woman and 12-year-old boy who were passengers. All were from Clearwater.

In an update Thursday morning, troopers said the 14-year-old boy had died from his injuries overnight.

The crash happened when the pickup driver heading south tried to change lanes and collided with another southbound pickup truck, troopers said. The collision caused both vehicles to rotate, and the first truck overturned in the grass median, ejecting all four occupants.

The second pickup came to a stop in the inside emergency lane. The 30-year-old man driving and two children riding with him, ages 4 and 3, were not injured. The driver and children live in Columbia, S.C.

The Highway Patrol has not released the names of anyone involved in the crash.

The crash blocked all southbound lanes on the highway. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office advised drivers to be patient and seek alternate travel routes as emergency crews responded to the crash.
