A severe multi-vehicle crash in Miami Gardens Saturday evening killed five people, including four children, and sent five others to the hospital, officials said.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and 25 units arrived at the scene at Northwest 170th Street and 37th Avenue.
According to officials, the crash involved three vehicles; a black Kia Sorento, a silver Cadillac Escalade and a white Nissan Altima.
The crash, officials said, was caused after the driver in the Sorento rear-ended the Altima, which then rear-ended the Escalade.
Police said the driver was speeding and under the influence of alcohol.
Surveillance video in the area captured the collision.
An off-duty Opa-locka officer witnessed the crash.
Once at the scene, crews extricated three patients.
Six people were transported as trauma alerts, while the other four were transported to a local hospital in Broward County.
“It’s a very tough night for our community,” said Miami Gardens Police Officer EJ. “It’s a very tough night for our officers responding to the scene.”
The four people who died were in the Altima. Their identities remain unknown.
“At this time, we can confirm that there’s five fatalities. One adult female and four children,” J said.
Police detained the driver of the Sorento and they remain in stable condition.
The driver’s identity has not been disclosed and it’s unclear if they will face any charges.
The conditions of the other five who were transported to the hospital remain unknown.
An investigation remains active.
