5 year-old killed in Orlando hit-and-run crash; Orange Blossom Trail reopened after overnight roadblock

ORLANDO, Fla. – A hit-and-run crash Saturday night in Orlando killed a 5-year-old, injured another and prompted an hourslong roadblock in the southbound lanes of North Orange Blossom Trail near Lake Fairview.

Police said the crash happened on North Orange Blossom Trail between John Young Parkway and near Ace Road around 10 p.m.

Officers initially described the wreck as a hit-and-run crash that injured a woman and a 5-year-old. Further details on the extent of their injuries were not released until Sunday afternoon, when we were told that the child had died. The department would confirm nothing beyond how the person who was still alive was in the hospital in critical condition.

The lanes were still closed as of Sunday morning but reopened by noon.

Police said the female that was injured was the passenger in the Nissan Pathfinder. Also in the SUV was a male driver and two other children that were uninjured.

The suspect in the hit-and-run was driving a silver Mercedes that became inoperable after the crash. The driver fled the scene on foot before being picked up by another vehicle, according to Orlando police. Police said they do not have a description of that vehicle at this time.
