69-year-old man killed after driving under safety arm, hit by Brightline: PBSO report

 A 69-year-old man was killed after investigators said he drove under a safety arm into the path of an oncoming Brightline train in Lake Park.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) said just after 3 p.m. on Thursday, units responded to reports of a vehicle vs. train crash on Northlake Boulevard and Alternate A1A.

Duane Matheson was driving a Mercury Sable on Northlake Boulevard, approaching the train tracks, when the signal lights were flashing and safety arms began to go down, according to the crash report.

PBSO said Matheson drove under one of the arms that was blocking the lanes and into the path of an oncoming Brightline train. The two collided, theMercury hitting the first train carriage. The car was propelled down a loose rock embankment, where it came to rest on its roof.

Tragically,Matheson was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, PBSO stated.
