74-year-old man struck, killed on Nova Road in Ormond Beach

A 74-year-old man was struck and killed Saturday morning while crossing Nova Road in Ormond Beach, police said.

The fatal wreck happened around 6:30 a.m.

Ormond Beach police said a vehicle was northbound in the right lane on Nova Road and had a green traffic light, and the pedestrian was crossing against the crosswalk signal and was not in a crosswalk.

The man was taken to Halifax Medical Center as a trauma alert but later died, according to police.

The driver of the vehicle did not see the pedestrian until it was too late to stop and immediately pulled over and called 911, police said.

No charges are expected to be filed against the driver, according to police.

“This tragic incident underscores the critical importance of safety on the roads, whether you’re a driver or pedestrian,” Police Chief Jesse Godfrey said. “Every one of us has a role in preventing such accidents, and it’s essential to remain vigilant and responsible whenever we’re on the road.”

Ormond Beach police released three tips for pedestrians and drivers after the crash:

For pedestrians:

  1. Use crosswalks: Always cross at marked crosswalks and obey signals.
  2. Be visible: Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially in low light.
  3. Stay alert: Avoid distractions like phones when crossing the street.

For drivers:

  1. Watch for pedestrians: Be vigilant, especially at intersections and crosswalks.
  2. Obey speed limits: Drive within the speed limit and adjust for conditions.
  3. Stay focused: Avoid distractions and keep your attention on the road.
