One person has died after a car crashed into a pond in Estero on Friday morning.

A man lost control of his vehicle while driving down Three Oaks Parkway, resulting in a fatal accident at the Villagio Condos pond.

The victim, identified as 75-year-old Anthony Basile, was unable to escape his Mercedes SUV as it veered off the road and crashed into nearby bushes, ultimately ending up in the pond at the Villagio Condominiums at 20101 Estero Gardens.

The LCSO dive team, marine units, and aviation responded to the scene along Estero Gardens Boulevard near Three Oaks Parkway.

Hal Reigi, the HOA president of Villagio, got into the pond trying to save Basile.

“I tried to get in the water and get him out, but the car went down so fast,” Reigi said.

According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO), Basile was the sole occupant of the SUV.

He was extracted from the car and taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

This crash is currently under investigation by the LCSO traffic unit.
