84-year-old man crossing road in wheelchair struck, killed in Volusia County, Florida Highway Patrol says

An 84-year-old DeLand man in an electric wheelchair was struck by a car and killed late Saturday while crossing a road in Volusia County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 10 p.m. on Old New York Avenue near its intersection with Ridgewood Avenue, troopers said.

According to an FHP crash report, the man in the wheelchair was crossing Old New York Avenue in a southerly direction as a 2013 Hyundai Genesis traveled eastbound on the road, approaching Ridgewood Avenue.

The man entered the direct path of the Hyundai and was struck by the front right of the sedan, troopers said, adding he was not in a marked crosswalk.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, the report states.

In the Hyundai, the 26-year-old DeLand man behind the wheel was not injured and remained on scene, troopers said.

FHP is still investigating.
