87-year-old woman dies as car crashes into Port St. Lucie home

The 87-year-old woman was killed after she crashed her car through a home in Port St. Lucie on Thursday afternoon.

The Port St. Lucie Police Department (PSLPD) said the deadly crash occurred when Z W crashed her Toyota Corolla into a home along SE Woodbine Road.

According to the preliminary investigation, at around 3:55 p.m., W was behind the wheel of a beige Toyota Corolla traveling westbound on SE Woodbine Road. The vehicle stopped within a traffic circle at the intersection of SE Veranda Preserve Boulevard before suddenly accelerating over the median, onto the shoulder, and through a backyard, ultimately crashing into a home, according to the crash report.

W, a resident of Port St. Lucie, was transported to a local hospital where she was later pronounced dead, according to PSLPD.

Police reported no structural damage to the home and confirmed there were no other injuries.

While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, police said it does not appear that speed or impairment were factors. Investigators suspect that W may have suffered a medical episode prior to the crash.
