After 911 callers reported an explosion and black smoke emanating from the structure, firefighters responded to a hangar fire in Wellington’s Aero Club community early Friday morning.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue (PBCFR) said units were dispatched around 5 a.m. to 15500 Chandelle Place. Upon arrival, crews found a 2,000-square-foot double hangar with thick smoke coming from the roofline.

The hangar’s owners managed to remove a small plane before conditions worsened, causing the hangar door to close. Photos show the plane slightly charred from the flames. Firefighters used multiple hose lines to combat the blaze and successfully prevented it from spreading to a nearby house.

PBCFR’s in-house fire investigators remained on the scene for several hours after the fire was extinguished. They determined the fire to be accidental in nature.
