A garage fire sparked by a faulty light fixture in a Stuart home on Tuesday morning, sending Martin County firefighters racing to contain the flames before they spread.
Martin County Fire Rescue (MCFR) said crews responded to a structure fire early on S.W. Otter Run Place, where flames broke out in the garage of a two-story residential home.
Crews arrived just before 7:30 a.m. to find a fire that had started from a malfunctioning light ballast — a device that regulates the electrical current in a light fixture. The faulty fixture ignited nearby items stored on the garage floor, with flames extending to the ceiling above.
MCFR said firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, preventing it from spreading further into the home. Two adult occupants were inside at the time but escaped unharmed.
Photos taken at the scene show the damage the fire did to the garage.
The fire department is reminding residents to always be cautious with electrical fixtures, especially in areas like garages where flammable materials may be stored.
“If you notice unusual smells, flickering lights, or signs of overheating, don’t ignore them—have the fixture checked by a professional,” MCFR stated.
