A deadly crash involving a semi-truck and a minivan shut down all northbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike in Fort Pierce, prompting a traffic homicide investigation and major delays across the area.
The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office (SLCSO) said it is assisting the Florida Highway Patrol with a traffic homicide investigation at Mile Marker 170. The crash occurred around 3 p.m. and remains an active scene.
The sheriff’s office said a semi-truck and trailer jackknifed and came to rest on top of the minivan. St. Lucie County Fire Rescue crews responded quickly and worked to assist trapped passengers. The extent of injuries has not yet been released, but authorities have confirmed the incident is being treated as a traffic homicide investigation.
Road Closures and Delays
- According to the sheriff’s office, all northbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike are closed near Mile Marker 170
- Traffic is backed up past Mile Marker 169
- The on-ramp at Exit 152 (Fort Pierce / S.R. 70 / Okeechobee Road) is also closed due to police activity
- Road Rangers are on scene assisting with traffic control
Motorists are urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. Expect heavy delays throughout the evening.
Under Florida law, drivers must move over or slow down when approaching emergency vehicles and personnel. Officials are asking the public to remain patient and cautious as crews work the scene.
