Suspect arrested after DeLand apartment complex shooting

Suspect arrested after DeLand apartment complex shooting

A man has been charged with first degree murder in connection to Friday’s shooting at an apartment complex in DeLand.

The Volusia Sheriff’s Office said that JAHF, 68, was arrested and transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail. He is being charged with first degree murder after he allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend.

The sheriff’s office identified the victim as 42-year-old CAW.

Investigators say that HF and his girlfriend, who live together in the complex, had a brief physical altercation on Thursday which was not reported to law enforcement. She then contacted W on Friday to pick her up from the apartment. HF confronted W and told him to leave. He then allegedly confronted W again before shooting the victim multiple times.

Original story below:

A man is dead after a shooting at an apartment on Friday morning in DeLand, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office said.

The complex is on Botts Landing Road. Deputies responded around 11:22 a.m. and found a man deceased on the scene.

The incident involved a woman’s current boyfriend, who is the apartment complex’s maintenance man, intervening in an argument with her ex-boyfriend. The sheriff said the maintenance man shot the ex-boyfriend in the head, chest, and hand.

The shooting happened outside, but deputies later found a gun inside an apartment, VSO said.

AG, a resident of the complex, shared her experience, saying her aunt heard six gunshots and then a woman started screaming and banging on her door for help.

Her aunt called 911 after seeing the maintenance man holding a gun. “Then she called me, can you please come home, dead guy, blood everywhere, they’re asking me to do CPR and I can’t, and maintenance man shot somebody, can you come home, it’s just been pretty crazy,” G said.

Sheriff Chitwood commented on the situation, saying, “If a firearm is anywhere near a domestic situation, somebody ends up dead. It’s just, it’s just the way it is. No matter what it is, if there’s a domestic and there’s a firearm involved, that firearm is going to be used.”
