Two pilots, Edward Murphy and Ian Frederick Hofmann, died in a private jet crash near Naples, but their quick thinking and decisive actions saved countless lives on the ground.
“Lost both engines. Emergency, making an emergency landing,” said one of the pilots as they realized the dire situation.
The National Transportation Safety Board released the cockpit audio transcripts, revealing the pilots’ final moments as they attempted to land the powerless jet safely.
“There’s some water right there,” a pilot suggested as they considered ditching the jet into the water.
“Should I prepare the cabin? Should I prepare the cabin?” asked a crew member, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
“Brace for impact,” instructed a pilot as they prepared for an emergency landing.
“Okay, hey, let me take over land in this water,” one of the pilots proposed.
“Negative, I’m landing right here,” one pilot responded.
The pilots faced a critical decision as they approached Interstate 75, aware that their actions could put people on the road in danger.
“No, the road’s got traffic, man,” one pilot noted, acknowledging the potential danger.
“It’s too late for the…” a pilot began.
“Ah, OK, Lord,” one pilot added.
In a final attempt to avoid disaster, the pilots aimed to steer the plane into the grass, away from cars and the retaining wall along the road.
“Land in the grass,” one pilot directed.
“Brace brace brace brace brace bra—” a crew member repeated.
The plane clipped a pickup truck and crashed into the wall, bursting into flames.
“Ah, all right,” were the last words recorded from the cockpit.
Despite the crash, three people on board survived. A flight attendant and two passengers managed to escape the burning jet through the rear door.
The NTSB has not yet said what caused both engines to fail as the jet approached Naples Airport.
