A motorcyclist died in a crash Wednesday with an SUV at the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and Edgewood Avenue North on the city’s Westside, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.
JSO said the crash happened around 3:48 p.m. Officials said a motorcyclist, who was a man in his 30s, was traveling north on Edgewood Avenue while a white SUV was traveling south on Edgewood.
When they got to the intersection, JSO said the SUV turned into the motorcycle, ejecting the rider, and he died at the scene.
The SUV’s driver, an 80-year-old woman, and a passenger in her 50s were both taken to the hospital in stable condition.
James Hucks is also a motorcyclist and said the motorcyclist who died was his friend. The two met two years ago through a motorcyclist group. Hucks said he found out about the crash on social media and rushed to the scene.
“It sucks in Jacksonville because back in August, I was run over by a box truck and passed away along with a friend and brought back to life by paramedics, so it’s hard to keep riding. It’s just not a safe environment in Jacksonville to ride in at all,” Huck said.
This crash marked the 142nd traffic fatality in Duval County and the 39th crash involving a motorcycle.
In 2024, there were 37 deadly motorcycle crashes, and the year before that, crash data showed there were 32 crashes.
