Homestead police announced the arrest of a man who allegedly snatched a cellphone from a person in a wheelchair.
It happened just before 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at the Miami Dade College campus at 500 College Terrace.
According to an arrest form, the victim was working on an assignment in the school library when JJ, 26, approached him.
After a brief conversation, police said J left for a few minutes, and when he returned, he immediately grabbed the victim’s phone.
Police said the victim tried to hang on to his phone, which led to J pulling the victim out of his wheelchair and onto the floor.
Investigators said they spoke to both the victim and a witness, who corroborated the victim’s account.
In the days that followed, investigators and the victim were able to identify J and police said on Nov. 18, school security contacted officers to alert them that J was back on the school’s campus.
Officers responded and, after locating J, took him into custody without incident.
Police said J denied taking the victim’s phone, but officers charged him with a felony count of strong-arm robbery.
He was granted a $7,500 bond by a judge, but he was still listed as behind bars at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of Wednesday morning.
