Driver strikes control box, pole at New Smyrna Beach travel park before fleeing, troopers say
A driver accused of fleeing a hit-and-run at a travel park led troopers on a high-speed chase that topped 110 mph before crashing into two vehicles near Interstate 95, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
According to an FHP report, troopers were investigating a hit-and-run reported early May 30 at Sugar Mill Ruins Travel Park in New Smyrna Beach. Investigators said they determined a gray Ford F-150 towing a large camper struck a control box and pole while trying to leave the property.
A witness followed the truck to the New Smyrna Church of Christ, where the driver unloaded the camper and left it abandoned before driving away in the truck, according to the report.
According to FHP Trooper Cano’s report, he later saw a gray Ford F-150 matching the description enter the travel park’s entrance while he was still at the scene. Trooper Cano said the truck quickly backed out, returned to the road and headed south on Old Mission Road.
The trooper then activated his lights and siren to stop the truck, but the driver fled. The pursuit continued south on Old Mission Road, a narrow two-lane roadway, with the truck traveling into oncoming traffic at high speeds according to the report.
Troopers said the truck turned west onto State Road 442 and then entered Interstate 95 northbound, where it continued weaving through lanes at speeds exceeding 110 mph. The driver took exit 249 and ran a red light at the intersection of State Road 44 and the Interstate 95ramps, striking a Ford F-150 and a GMC Yukon. All three vehicles were totaled, the report said.
No injuries were reported to the occupants of the other vehicles, according to the report.
After the crash, the driver regained consciousness and resisted being handcuffed, prompting the trooper to use a Taser multiple times before gaining compliance.
According to the report, FHP troopers identified the suspect as H and noted H’s driver’s license was suspended in December 2025.
The report states troopers observed constricted pupils, mumbled speech and signs consistent with being under the influence of a controlled substance.
Officials said H was transported by ambulance to Halifax Health Medical Center and was later booked into the Volusia County Jail after medical clearance.
According to booking information, H was charged with:
- Fleeing and eluding police with disregard for safety
- Driving under the influence
- Driving while license suspended, revoked or canceled
- Leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage
- Obstructing an officer without violence
According to the report, the abandoned camper was located about 1:30 p.m. at the New Smyrna Church of Christ and had damage consistent with the travel park crash.
