One person was killed Monday after a small plane crashed in a remote part of Polk County.
Sheriff Grady Judd said the plane went down around 8 p.m. in a cow pasture about a mile off Moore Road.
The pilot had taken off from Bartow. According to the sheriff, he was meeting up with another pilot to fly formations in the countryside.
“It was a beautiful afternoon to do that,” Judd said. “Unfortunately, it ended in horrible tragedy”
The other pilot described seeing the tragedy unfold.
“He said he looked down when he saw his partner had disappeared, just in time to see the plane apparently come apart and it immediately crashed straight down into the ground,” Judd said. “When we arrived, that’s exactly what we found.”
The victim’s name has not yet been released. Judd said his deputies were still working to notify the man’s family Monday night.
Officials described the plane as a “single-seater experimental aircraft,” and said it could cruise at about 200 mph.
It’s unclear what might have caused the crash.
The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration will be investigating further.
