A burglary at a home and barn in Crestview ended with an arrest after a man recognized a truck he believed was connected to the crime and called the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies say the man discovered the property had been burglarized and reported seeing a GMC pickup leaving the area of Mount Olive Road. The following day, the same truck returned to the property.
The man saw the driver, later identified as 40-year-old R, on the property and immediately contacted deputies, according to the release.
Deputies located the truck nearby and conducted a traffic stop. During the investigation, R consented to a search of the vehicle, and deputies recovered about $1,800 worth of stolen property belonging to the victim, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies also reported finding about 1 gram of fentanyl, a bottle containing promethazine, two spray devices containing Valium, a digital scale with residue that field-tested positive for methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and a concealed knife.
Because R is a convicted felon, he was also charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.
R told deputies he believed the property had been abandoned because the owner was deceased.
The victim told deputies R did not have permission to be on the property or remove anything.
R was charged with burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, grand theft, three counts of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.
No further details have been released.
