A suspect was taken into custody after a St. Pete city employee was shot and killed in the Childs Park neighborhood.

Police responded Wednesday afternoon to 12th Avenue, where they say the victim, a 47-year-old mother of four, was shot several times while in the cab of her front-end loader work vehicle.

During a press conference, Chief Anthony Holloway said evidence suggests an argument broke out between the suspect and the victim — who knew each other — prior to the shooting.

Just hours after the shooting, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) found the suspect on I-75 in Ft. Myers and pulled him over, but he was barricaded inside his car.

Eventually, FHP said the suspect was taken into custody and transported to the hospital with serious injuries following the standoff. No injuries were reported to law enforcement.

At this time, detectives believe the incident was “domestic-involved.”

The woman who was killed in the shooting worked for the city for 12 years and was a sanitation technician. While Wednesday was a working day for city employees, officials could not confirm whether the woman was on the clock at the time of the shooting.
