1 killed, 1 arrested after deadly hit-and-run crash in Apopka

A 37-year-old Orlando man was killed in a crash Tuesday night in Apopka, and the driver of the other vehicle was arrested after investigators said he fled the scene on foot.

The crash happened just before 7:30 p.m. on County Road 435, also known as Clarcona Road, at Gilliam Road.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 46-year-old Orlando man was driving a 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe southbound on Clarcona Road, approaching Gilliam Road. At the same time, a 37-year-old Orlando man was driving a 1999 Honda Civic northbound on Clarcona Road.

FHP said the driver of the Tahoe tried to turn left onto Gilliam Road but crashed into the front of the Civic.

The Honda driver was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. FHP said he was not wearing a seat belt.

After the crash, witnesses told investigators they saw the Tahoe driver flee the scene on foot.

FHP said that with assistance from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, the driver was detained about one mile from the crash scene.

FHP identified the driver who fled as J, 46, of Orlando. He was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving a death and booked into the Orange County Jail.
