An Orlando couple was married in a hospital on Saturday after the groom was injured in a head-on crash while on his way to the wedding venue, according to the couple’s attorneys.
In addition to a significant laceration to the knee, both of D’s arms were broken in the crash, as well as his jaw and a rib, the Osborne, Francis & Pettis Law Firm said in a news release. He was released from the hospital Wednesday afternoon, according to the release.
The couple, alongside their attorneys, held a press conference where they shared their story for the first time since that day.
“I’m just in my own little world, and out of nowhere, man, just got struck by a car, and not even, you know, not even thinking at the time, not even knowing what’s going on. I was so delirious,” D said. “It was nothing but God that got me through this.”
The crash occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 5 when a vehicle crossed the lane on East Altamonte Drive and struck the car that D was taking to a venue in Altamonte Springs, the law firm said.
“I was able to follow it in and watch them unload him from the back of the ambulance. But just seeing him in that state was very, very traumatizing, and I remember in the car just saying like my biggest fear is losing him,” T, his now wife, said.
According to the Altamonte Springs Police Department, the crash — at Hermits Trail and State Road 436 (East Altamonte Drive) — sent a total of two adults and a juvenile to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
“His bride-to-be got a call just an hour before the wedding ceremony that her future husband was in an accident and was being transported to the hospital. She and her family, who were gathered for the wedding, immediately drove to ORMC, where Mr. D was being treated,” the release states. “But instead of postponing their nuptials, after Mr. D was stabilized, the couple opted to gather their friends later that evening while he was still in a hospital bed at ORMC to tie the knot.”
“Throughout all of the trauma that I’m dealing with, I want to have this ring on, and it signifies our love that we have for each other. Six strong years, and just a lifetime ahead of us,” D said.
D’s grandfather officiated the service, according to the law firm.
“(D) was hospitalized with serious injuries, so rather than saying ‘I do’ at the event center they selected in Altamonte Springs, the bride, Ts, and groom instead said their vows in a multipurpose room at ORMC later that evening,” the release states.
The couple’s attorneys would not comment on whether or not any legal action would be pursued. They said they are waiting for some final reports before they make any decision.
