SEMINOLE, Fla. (WFLA) — A person on an electric scooter was hospitalized after slamming into a fire truck Tuesday afternoon, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Around 2:19 p.m., a Pinellas Suncoast Fire & Rescue District truck was leaving a call for service, heading westbound on San Rafael Drive just north of Seminole.
At the same time, a person on a motorized scooter was traveling northbound on Del Prado Drive West when they ran a stop sign at the intersection.
As the fire truck went through the intersection, the driver saw the person on the electric scooter in his peripheral vision and attempted to brake and veer right to avoid a collision, FHP said.
The person on the scooter tried to make a sharp right turn onto eastbound San Rafael Drive but was traveling too fast. FHP said they collided with the back of the fire truck and flew off the scooter.
The victim was taken to a nearby hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The scooter had inoperable damage, while the fire truck sustained minor damage to the back roll-up door and the cover panel of the back outrigger.
WFLA.com has reached out to confirm the person on the electric scooter’s identity, along with additional updates on the crash.
