Additional charges against woman in connection to Stuart man’s death

More charges have been filed against a woman who was connected to the death of a man whose body was dumped in Stuart.

According to Martin County Court records, Lori Beth Hart, 46, faces an additional charge of failure to report a death.

In August, Hart was taken to the Martin County Jail where she was booked on counts of tampering with evidence in connection to the death of 56-year-old Chester Smith, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies say Smith’s body was discovered with a gunshot wound on Thursday near Darling Street in Stuart.

Hart and Smith did have a relationship with one another but it’s unclear what the nature of the relationship was, deputies say.

The investigation into the homicide began after MCSO received a 911 call from a man who claimed he was with two women who allegedly shot and killed another man.

In a news conference with Sheriff William Snyder, it was stated that a woman had gone to the Sheriff’s Office voluntarily to provide a statement. It’s unclear if Hart was that woman.

The woman had explained to deputies, she had gotten into an altercation with Smith, and it escalated when she shot him. During the news conference, Snyder proceeded to say the woman, possibly with some help, dumped the body on the dirt road of Darling Street. He continued, saying that the street was near the home of the man who had initially called the Sheriff’s Office.
