The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office issued an urgent winter traffic advisory on Wednesday warning residents of dangerous ice conditions across the county.

The Sheriff’s Office said severe ice accumulation on roads and bridges caused several crashes.

Interstate 95 was shut down for hours Wednesday in both directions and so was US-17. But both reopened after cthe rashes were cleared around noon.

Officials still urged drivers to continue to use caution while traveling and stay home if it’s not necessary to travel.

US-17 was also closed in both directions at the Duval County line due to ice and a crash with no injuries around 9:30 a.m. and reopened in both directions at 10:15 a.m.

A major crash with injuries was also reported at 6:30 a.m. on I-95 South and right lanes were blocked.

The sheriff’s office said most county roads were open and clear.

“Use extreme caution,” the sheriffs office said. “NCSO is monitoring conditions and is still urging residents to stay indoors and off the roads.”

The Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) / Shave Bridge reopened at 3:15 a.m. after a brief closure but cars were escorted by Sheriff’s Office vehicles and must follow the escort guidance.

The sheriff’s office said the ICW was open and recently salted at 7:30 a.m. and was being monitored.

Here are the roads that were closed around 4 a.m.:

  • I-95 southbound at the Florida-Georgia line
  • Chester Road
  • County Road 108 between 17 and U.S. Highway 1 (local traffic only)

Hazardous conditions have been reported as follows:

  • Significant ice on U.S. Highway 1 and the Georgia Bridge
  • Dangerous conditions on Lofton Creek Bridge
  • Widespread ice throughout Hilliard and northern Nassau County

More than 4,000 customers were reported without power in Nassau County around 9 a.m. Wednesday.
