Ambulance responding to emergency call hits bicyclist in Pinellas County

A 41-year-old man was hospitalized Saturday night after being hit by an ambulance in Pinellas County.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol crash report, two ambulances were traveling northbound on US19 N at 9:29 p.m. Both vehicles were responding to a call and had their emergency lights and sirens activated.

As the two approached a green light at the intersection of Citrus Drive, a man riding a bicycle attempted to cross the street within the westbound crosswalk.

One of the ambulances hit the man’s left side, causing him to overturn onto the road, separated from his bicycle. The second ambulance then hit the bicycle that had been redirected into its path.

The victim was taken to the hospital and intubated, FHP said.

During the investigation into the crash, troopers discovered “a dripping alcoholic beverage” within the debris field near where the bicyclist came to rest after the collision.
