Armed man killed in Boynton Beach officer-involved shooting

One man is dead after being shot by a police officer during a confrontation late Saturday morning at a park in Boynton Beach.

The shooting happened after a father called 911 to report his son was suffering from mental health issues or was possibly on drugs and armed with a knife. Several officers responded around 10:45 a.m. to the scene, in the 600 block of NE 20th Lane.

When they arrived, the son was spotted at nearby Intracoastal Park and officers reported he was carrying a machete. The Boynton Beach Police Department (BBPD) reported that during the confrontation multiple officers opened fire and the son was shot.

Few details about what led to the officers firing have been released, with BBPD Chief Joe DiGiulio noting during a news conference that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will take over the investigation into the shooting.

Immediately after the son was shot, officers began taking life-saving measures until medical responders arrived. The man was taken to an area hospital where he later died.

His name has not been released at this time.

The shooting led to the closure of the northbound lanes of Federal Highway from Harvey E. Oyer Boat Ramp to Gateway Boulevard. The road has since reopened. The park remained closed as of 2 p.m. and authorities were not able to say at that time when it would reopen.

BBPD confirmed an officer has been placed on administrative leave per department policy.
