Hilberto Callejas, a 26-year-old Hendry County man, was arrested in connection to the incident.
“Shortly before nine this morning our deputies were called to the Ave Maria community in response to a domestic violence-related incident. Callejas ram this vehicle into the victim’s vehicle,” Sheriff Kevin Rambosk said in a CCSO Facebook post. “He then got out of his vehicle and struck the victim’s window with a gun breaking the glass. Witness confronted Callejas and Callejas shot him in the shoulder and fled the scene.”
CCSO said Callejas fled in a car and led deputies on a chase to the area of Everglades Boulevard N and 60th Avenue NE in Golden Gate Estates.
The large response prompted the use of aviation units to assist in finding the suspect. Callejas was located in swampy water behind a Golden Gates Estates home.
Nearby Estates Elementary School was under precautionary ‘secure the campus’ protocol due to deputy activity in the area. Deputies said there was no danger to the area or the school.
Callejas is facing multiple charges including aggravated assault and shooting into an occupied vehicle.
