The Bradenton Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Investigators were on the scene of a fatal pedestrian-involved hit and run crash. It happened last night at 11:30p.m in the 1300 block of 15th Street West, just behind The Salvation Army.
Police say the victim is a man in his 20s. He was asleep or sitting in the grass by the sidewalk when a driver sped through the street, lost control, hit a pole, and hit the victim. The driver fled on foot and police are still searching for them.
ABC 7 was on the scene the following morning. Friends of the victim say he was asleep during the crash and leaning against the Salvation Army’s fence when it happened. Right now, crews are working to repair that fence.
“He was good to me I knew him since middle school,” said a friend of the victim, R W. “He’s gone that quick, I don’t understand it,” she added.
“This is not the first accident we’ve had out here, but what’s weird about this one is that most all of the other ones have been crossing the street,” said another friend of the victim, D H. “He wasn’t crossing the street he was sleeping on the sidewalk,” she said.
A block over, last August, a man was crossing the street with his bike when he was hit and killed by a car. The driver also fled the scene.
These Bradenton locals say they are just trying to survive.
“When it comes to staying out here on the street, it’s hard,” said H. “You have to pay every night just to try to stay in here (The Salvation Army) and they only limit to so many people, so if you’re not the first one in line or don’t have the money to pay, you can’t stay in there,” she said.
