Broward deputy interrupts sexual assault in progress, cuffs suspect, report states

A Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy responding to a call about a woman screaming for help in Oakland Park stopped a man who was in the middle of sexually assaulting her, according to documents made public on Thursday.

According to a BSO arrest report, the crime happened Sunday night in the 1200 block of Oakland Park Boulevard, just east of Interstate 95.

The victim, the report states, told detectives that Ever Esteban Lopez, 41, attacked her as she was walking home from work.

The report states that Deputy Ramiro Chambers, after being sent to the scene, came upon Esteban Lopez “still engaged in his attack.”

Chambers wrote that Esteban Lopez “appeared to be holding her down with his left arm while trying to remove her shorts with his left hand” as the woman fought back.

According to the report, Chambers flipped on the police lights in his cruiser and Esteban Lopez stood up and let the victim go, zipping up his pants to close his jeans. He would be detained.

The victim told detectives that Esteban Lopez “attacked her without provocation,” the report states.

She told investigators that as she fought back by scratching and punching Esteban Lopez, along with twisting his ear, he pulled down her shirt and “slobbered” on her breast and put his hands down her pants, groping and scratching her genitals, deputies said.

The report states that he also “smacked” her in the buttocks “multiple times” as he tried to remove her shorts.

It states that during an interview with detectives, Esteban Lopez denied the allegations.

When asked about scarring on his arms, chest and lower back, he claimed that the injuries, despite appearing fresh, came from “trapping an iguana” earlier in the week, deputies said.

Esteban Lopez, who appeared to have been crying in his booking photo after being arrested on charges of sexual battery and false imprisonment, remained in the BSO Main Jail Thursday on a $90,000 bond.

A Broward judge ordered he have no contact with the victim and submit to electronic monitoring if released.
