BSO: Open bottles found in driver’s car after Deerfield Beach crash involving 3 vehicles

A 39-year-old man was arrested over the weekend after he caused a three-vehicle crash in Deerfield Beach while driving under the influence of alcohol, authorities said.

According to his arrest report, the crash occurred around 8:15 p.m. Saturday on South Dixie Highway near the intersection of Hillsboro Boulevard.

Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies said the suspect, Marcus Vinicius Dos Santos, of Deerfield Beach, was driving north on South Dixie Highway in a vehicle that was not registered to him when he rear-ended a vehicle that was stopped at a red light.

Deputies that the impact of the crash caused the vehicle that was struck to push forward into another vehicle.

The vehicles that were hit sustained about $20,000 and $10,000 in damages, respectively.

According to the arrest report, when a deputy arrived at the scene, one of the victims told him that Dos Santos, who was not wearing a shirt, ran away after the crash.

Authorities said Dos Santos returned to the scene as the deputy was there, and was bleeding from his left arm.

His speech was slurred and he had bloodshot eyes, the report stated.

Deputies said blood was also observed inside the vehicle Dos Santos was in, along with an open bottle of Heineken in the center console and an open cooler behind the driver’s seat that contained an empty bottle of whiskey that had no lid, several bottles of soda and another empty bottle of beer.

According to the arrest report, it was determined that Dos Santos was traveling at a high rate of speed when the crash occurred, which caused about $10,000 in damages to the vehicle he was driving.

Deputies said Dos Santos and one of the victims were transported to Broward Health North where Dos Santos refused to provide a blood sample or submit to a Breathalyzer test.

He was ultimately arrested on charges of DUI, DUI with damage to property or a person, driving with an expired license, possession of an open container while driving and failure to use due care.

As of Monday afternoon, he was being held at the Broward Main Jail on an $8,150 bond.
