Deputies with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) said they attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a car driving recklessly early Friday morning southeast of Lake City. But deputies had to quickly switch gears and save the driver’s life after a crash occurred.
Deputies said there were three people in the car and identified the driver as DC.
Deputies said C was driving recklessly and did not stop when authorities activated their emergency lights.
The agency posted a video on their Facebook page that shows deputies chasing C’ car at a high speed, before it runs off the road and crashes into a tree. Authorities warn the video contains graphic images and viewer discretion is advised.
Then, in the video, the car catches on fire. Deputies said they immediately requested assistance from fire and medical units. The two deputies on the scene used their fire extinguishers to put out the flames.
Deputies posted on social media that they were eventually able to extract everyone in the car.
The suspect and passengers sustained serious injuries, deputies said, and were transported to the hospital.
Deputies said that in addition to his injuries, C now faces criminal charges.
Columbia County Sheriff’s officials said they commend these deputies for their actions both during the pursuit and immediately following the crash, highlighting the fact that we never know when we will have to transition from pursuing a suspect to saving their life.
