Coral Springs Police Officer Injured Arresting “Combative” Bicyclist

A Coral Springs Police officer was injured while trying to arrest a man fleeing from police on a bicycle, according to court records.

David Jaheim Williams, 18, of Coral Springs, was recklessly riding his bicycle north in the southbound lanes of North University Drive near West Sample Road on March 14, purposely impeding traffic, when a patrolling officer spotted him around midnight, according to an arrest affidavit.

The officer said he tried to pull Williams over in his marked police car with lights and sirens and even yelled for Williams to stop. But the bicyclist “made a vulgar hand motion” at the officer and kept on riding away, the report states.

A pursuit ensued involving multiple patrol cars, police said. When officers at last caught up with Williams and removed him from his bike, the teen resisted arrest and was “verbally and physically combative,” according to the affidavit.

At one point, an officer was struck in his left leg by Williams’ metal bicycle and suffered a severe bruise and cut on his left shin. The officer was brought to Broward Health Coral Springs and treated for his injuries, the records state.

Williams was arrested on charges that included battery on an officer, resisting an officer, and riding a bicycle without lights. He was released without bond by a judge who placed him on a curfew, records show.
