A Naples couple was able to safely get out of their condo, during a fire early Thursday morning.
It happened at the Charleston Square Village complex.
Fire and water cleanup crews were busy in the unit while fire prevention teams monitored a hotspot flare-up. Condo owner Walter Smith explained through what he and his wife went through.
“At about 3:15 this morning, I woke up and something smelled funny, and I woke her up and she didn’t smell anything, so I went out and investigated, walked around our condo. Then, I walked out on the balcony and I could see what looked like fog coming out over the building and I said ‘that’s not fog’ and called 9-1-1,” said Smith.
Smith said fire crews responded quickly to contain the flames, and thankfully no one was hurt. They say it started in the attic. Despite regular inspections, Smith’s smoke detectors didn’t activate so he said he’s grateful he could call 9-1-1 before it spread further.
Smith says his apartment and several shops on the lower floor have water damage. Shop owners said they’re devastated because they have water damage again, after they flooded during Hurricanes Ian and Milton.
“It’s going to be a big inconvenience for us and our neighbors, but we’ll get through it,” Smith said.
Investigators are trying to figure out how the fire started.
